In 1996, after 36 years of conflict, Guatemala signed the Peace Accords. One of the agreements that It has been successfully fulfilled and is considered one of the most important legacies for the European Union; It is the community forestry concession model in the multiple-use zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR) implemented by the Association of Forest Communities of Petén (ACOFOP); also known as the «Forests of Peace».
